About Us
The Cake Walk was started in 2004 by school teacher, Debbie Mallard, in order to earn supplemental income. As a teacher, she had two months off in the summer and needed something to occupy her time as well as have a stress reliever during the school year. With a background in biology and chemistry baking was a perfect fit for her. “Baking is like conducting a lab – everything has to be measured exactly and mixed so that the cake turns out as it should.” On her own she learned baking techniques and gradually taught herself how to ice and decorate cakes.
As her techniques progressed, Debbie focused more on wedding cakes. “There is just something magical about being a part of someone’s wedding day!” She learned how to construct and transport wedding cakes by donating tiered cakes for area high school proms. This experience gave her confidence to begin making wedding cakes and in March of 2006 she booked her first wedding cake.
Debbie continues to research and study the latest wedding cake trends as well as learn new cake decorating techniques. As of Fall 2008, she will solely focus on meeting the cake needs of brides in the Raleigh, Cary, Durham and Chapel Hill area.
