Hurricanes and Outdoor Weddings

This past weekend I delivered a wedding cake to Haywood Hall, a historical house located in downtown Raleigh. This historical home hosted both the outdoor ceremony and reception.  With the threat of Tropical Storm Hanna forecasted to drop inches of rain on the Raleigh area I could not help but feel bad for the bride and her family. After months and months of planning you are now faced with a major weather event occurring on your wedding day in addition to the fact that you have planned both an outdoor ceremony and reception. The cake was made and decorated and I just kept my fingers crossed hoping all of the rain would magically disappear by delivery time. In the famous words of one my favorite childhood songs “ Out came the sun and dried up all the rain!” I was so relieved that by the afternoon the weather had passed and the cake could be set up without the fear of hurricane force winds blowing it over!

This whole experience reminded me of a fact that I heard on TV - early to mid September is peak hurricane season for Atlantic hurricanes ( http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/tcfaq/G1.html). Brides to be, be warned! If you are looking to plan an outdoor wedding in September be aware that there are powers to be and statistical data against you. Not only should brides be mindful of his fact, but those grooms who are planning exotic cruises and booking all inclusive resorts in the Caribbean. Having a cruise postponed or ending up getting evacuated from your honeymoon doesn’t sound like paradise. So grooms, be warned! Do your homework when planning a honeymoon in hurricane prone areas such as Key West, Cancun, and other Caribbean destinations.( http://www.usatoday.com/weather/hurricane/2004-04-28-hurricanes-vacations_x.htm)
