Top 5 Wedding Cake Trends

The summer wedding cake season is starting to slow down and over the past three months we have seen some popular trends among the cakes we have done this past season. So here is our list of the top five cake trends…

1. Ribbon Borders

So many cakes this season have incorporated the use of real ribbon around the edge of the cake as a border. This has been a great way for brides to accessorize their cakes with their color palette. The color of ribbon is vibrant and gives a clean look to the cake. As opposed to ribbon crafted out of sugar, real ribbon is a cost effective way to decorate a cake since it takes little time to make and put on the cake. Ribbon on a cake is a sure way to decorate a cake without breaking your wedding cake budget!

2. Metal Monogram Cake Toppers

Monograms have always been a big hit in the south. From handbags , bracelets , necklaces, and even flip flips if it can be monogrammed you can be sure a southern woman will do it! Why stop at monogrammed flip flops when you can monogram your wedding cake? There have been two ways we have been monogramming cakes. One way is to actually have the monogram on the side of the cake. How do you add the monogram on the wedding cake ? The answer: brides initial, couples initial, then grooms initial. Another way to add the monogram is have a custom made metal monogram topper. You can either order one letter to put on top or you can order three.

3. Gerbera Daisies

Gerbera daisies are a fun, bold, and cost effective floral choice for brides. They come in a variety of colors and from my personal experience they do not wilt as easily as other choices. Brides have requested gerbera daisies to be placed on their cakes for decoration. Just like ribbon, fresh flowers can also be a simple and cost effective way to decorate your wedding cake.

4. Hot Pink!

A girlfriend of mine has a sign in her house that reads “ Pink Isn’t A Color It’s An Attitude!” It always makes me smile when I visit her! Pink has been a hot color choice this season – light pink, watermelon, and fuschia have all been colors we have incorporated in our cakes this summer. Brides wanting a fun and sassy cake have been requesting pink ribbon, pink stripes, or pink flowers on their cakes.

5. Buttercream

I am always looking at bridal magazine to see what the top cake designers are making and nine times out of ten the cakes are covered with fondant. In reality most brides are not requesting fondant, but buttercream cakes. There seems to be an overwhelming opinion among the brides we met with that fondant looks pretty, but they rather have a cake that tastes good.
